Upcoming “Raw Opium” Screenings in the UK and USA

Over the next few weeks three public screenings are planned for “Raw Opium: Pain, Pleasure, Profits”, our feature documentary about the complex issues surrounding the war on drugs, the global drug trade and heroin addiction.

Raw Opium Screenings

Nearly three years after we launched “Raw Opium” for a limited theatrical run, followed by TV broadcasts around the world and a community marketing program (funded by the Open Society Foundations), university and community groups continue to host their own film screenings. By all accounts, Raw Opium lends itself particularly well to discussions related to drug policy through its wide-ranging examination of the international trade in opium and heroin.

On February 19th 2014, Swansea University in the United Kingdom is hosting a free public event entitled ‘The Dilemmas of Drug Policy: Global to Local,’ with a screening of “Raw Opium”, hosted by the Global Drug Policy Observatory. Panelists include Professor Julia Buxton from the School of Public Policy at the Central European University in Budapest; Baroness Molly Meacher, the Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) for Drug Policy Reform; Ifor Glyn, the Chief Executive at SANDS CYMRU; Mike Trace, the Chief Executive of The Rehabilitation for Addicted Prisoners Trust (RAPt) and Chair of the International Drug Policy Consortium (IDPC) steering group; and Professor David Bewley-Taylor from Swansea University.

Two weeks later, director Peter Findlay will travel to attend two university screenings in the U.S. to speak with students about the film and the issues it raises. On March 5, 2014, he attends a screening at Gettysburg University in Pennsylvania and on March 6, Shippensburg University’s International Studies Program is hosting a free screening and discussion about the film. Stay tuned here for more screening updates!
