Two men from different generations with very different life paths come together to work to end the plight of child soldiers. Hear about Roméo’s eye-opening experiences during the Rwandan civil war and Michel’s terrifying time as a child soldier in the Democratic Republic of Congo, and how both men survived and came together.

Roméo Dallaire

A champion for global human rights, Lieutenant-General The Honourable Roméo A. Dallaire has had a distinguished career in the Canadian military. In 1994, he commanded the United Nations Assistance Mission for Rwanda (UNAMIR), and from his experience there he wrote Shake Hands with the Devil: The Failure of Humanity in Rwanda. The book was awarded the Governor General’s Literary Award for Non-Fiction in 2004. Since his retirement from the military, Dallaire has worked to raise awareness and understanding of post-traumatic stress disorder and he has also written about conflict resolution, humanitarian assistance, child soldiers and human rights.

Michel Chikwanine

Former child soldier, Michel Chikwanine overcame unimaginable adversity while growing up amid the terror the Great War of Africa brought to the Democratic Republic of Congo. Michel witnessed his father tortured, mother raped and was tortured himself. Michel’s childhood was ravaged by the death and decay of a war that claimed the lives of millions, including his father. Michel – accomplished motivational speaker – addresses audiences across North America. A truly remarkable individual and humanitarian, Michel captured the attention of national media as he inspires people to believe in their ability to create change through his passion and belief in the possibility for change.
